Kopin Achieves Single-Panel Full-Color MicroLED Display Brightness Exceeding 150,000 Nits

July 14 — U.S. microdisplay technology leader Kopin Corporation announced that its full-color MicroLED development program, designed for U.S. Army dismounted soldier vision applications, has achieved three major milestones. The company expects to transition into product production by mid-2027, providing critical display technology for next-generation soldier vision systems.

Kopin first achieved a significant breakthrough in display performance by demonstrating single-panel full-color test results exceeding 150,000 nits of brightness, substantially surpassing the program's threshold target. This milestone establishes a strong technical foundation for developing high-performance MicroLED displays tailored for Augmented Reality (AR) and mission-critical applications. Kopin plans to further enhance brightness performance through continuous optimization.

Second, in terms of system integration, Kopin has successfully advanced the early integration of its full-color MicroLED technology into integrated soldier vision systems. This lays the groundwork for future applications, such as portable mission command systems, which have stringent requirements for lightweight, ultra-bright, full-color displays to enable real-time situational awareness, digital information overlay, and tactical execution.

Looking back since 2026, Kopin’s microdisplay technology business development has shown a multi-faceted momentum. On the contract front, Kopin secured multiple important orders during the year: a $21.5 million follow-on production contract for thermal imaging eyepieces, a $5.6 million order for European pilot helmet-mounted displays, and a $1.0 million DarkWAVE night vision module development order.

In emerging markets, Kopin officially entered the FPV drone field with an initial $3.2 million order, planning to deliver up to 40,000 specialized goggles by 2028.

In the MicroLED technology field, in March this year, Kopin was awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the U.S. government to advance the R&D of novel full-color, small-size MicroLED display technology to meet the needs of a series of dismounted soldier applications.

More strategically significant, in May this year, Kopin reached an optical interconnect technology cooperation with fabless semiconductor firm Fabric.AI, securing a $15.0 million initial development order and a 19.9% equity stake, extending its MicroLED technology to AI data center interconnect scenarios. In addition, Kopin established a full-scale MicroOLED microdisplay manufacturing line at its headquarters to meet defense demands.

In terms of performance, in the first quarter of this year, Kopin’s total revenue was $10.6 million, remaining basically flat compared with the same period last year, but the revenue structure underwent significant changes. Product revenue declined to $5.4 million due to lower shipments of thermal weapon sights, while non-product revenue surged to $5.1 million driven by government-funded projects and strategic cooperation.

As of the end of the first quarter, the company’s cash and cash equivalents were $34.1 million. Including restricted cash and marketable securities, the total reached $59.5 million, providing liquidity to support operations past the second quarter of 2027.

Michael Murray, CEO of Kopin, stated that these three key achievements in MicroLED display technology will accelerate the domestic MicroLED manufacturing process in the United States. The brightness breakthrough reflects the competitiveness of the technology route, while the deployment of bonding equipment provides infrastructure support for domestic production.

More defense-related projects in the future are expected to bring long-term revenue on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars to the company. The company will continue to strengthen advanced display capabilities and consolidate its leading position in the field of high-performance MicroLED. (Compiled by LEDinside)
